There are many safe cities to live in California, but the specific cities that are considered the safest can vary depending on the criteria used to measure safety. Home Security

Orange County has consistently been one of the safest counties to live in. It's always a good idea to research and compare crime rates, emergency services, and other factors when determining the safety of a city. It's also important to keep in mind that no place is completely free of crime, and it's always a good idea to take steps to protect yourself and your property. Be proactive about home security. Adding a home security system to your home is an excellent way to deter criminals.

California Migration Patterns During The Pandemic

By Eric Engelbert 12/06/2022

Since the California gold rush of 1848, the state has increased in population every single year. With the promise of gold, sun tans, movie stars and the best weather in the world, of course, people have flocked to the golden state.

But, the covid pandemic was the catalyst for change and the first year on record of a declining California population. The effects of the decline remain to be seen. The population decreased by .66% or 261,902. That's not a big number but a start of a trend. Since 2010, every year, 7.5 million people moved from California to other states (Hans Johnson). California has always lost residents but has always gained more residents than it lost...until now.

Where did people move?

Over the three-year period of 2019 to 2021 these states had the largest increase in population:

  1. Idaho's population increased by 6.16% or 111,863
  2. Utah's population increased by 4.16% or 134,592
  3. Texas's population increased by 3.13% or 541,147
  4. Washington's population increased by 2.8% or 124,668
  5. Colorado's population increased by 2.01% or 53,583
  6. North Dakota's population increased by 1.96% or 11,224
  7. Nevada's population increased by 1.71% or 53,220
  8. Florida's population increased by 1.34% or 289,072
  9. Arizona had a huge population increase in 2018 and 2019 but it declined in 2020 and then increased in 2021 for a net gain of 1.59%

The number one reason people move out of California is housing. Secondly, people move due to employment.

The migration to other states has created a huge housing boom. Prices have skyrocketed in areas like Boise, ID, Salt Lake City, UT and Austin TX. This will have a lasting effect on those areas. Think infrastructure, roads, freeways, grocery stores, and schools. The additional real estate tax will help to pay for the infrastructure but it will most likely be ten years behind.
